What is lithography?

Lithography is a printing technique in which the artist draws with greasy materials onto a previously polished limestone from Bavaria, dating back 120 to 200 million years. Through chemical procedures, the stone acquires the ability to react to both grease and water, allowing ink to adhere only to the previously drawn areas. After, the design is printed onto paper or the chosen support, with the possibility of producing as many copies as you want. Choosing lithography is choosing a unique experience unlike any other graphic practice. Its uniqueness lies in the possibility of drawing directly onto the stone as if it were paper, with complete freedom of gesture, line, and mark. It means working in direct contact with a millenary stone and embracing a process where the image emerges from the balance between gesture, chemistry, and time. Added to this is the extraordinary fidelity of the prints, resulting from the physical and chemical characteristics of the lithographic matrix. This particular experience has historically seduced numerous artists—from Goya to Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso to Miró, Chagall or Käthe Kollwitz— who found in lithography a territory of experimentation, freedom, and expressive depth. Choosing lithography is inhabiting a living tradition where technique, matter, and poetics merge into a single creative act.

What other graphic techniques can be practiced?
In addition to original lithography on stone, the studio offers various techniques such as metal etching, aquatint, monotype, drypoint, woodcut, collagraph, and artist's books.

Who are we?

Founded in 1997 by its director Natalia Giacchetta, Centro de Edición Taller Galería is an Argentinian institution specialized in the teaching, promotion, editing, and sale of lithographs and original printed art. Since 2005, we have welcomed artists from all over the world to learn and deepen their lithographic skills while developing their graphic work alongside our team. Over the years, more than 300 artists have experimented with lithography at the Center, including renowned Argentine masters such as León Ferrari, Luis Felipe Noé, Eduardo Stupia, Liliana Porter, Ana Eckell, Carolina Antoniadis, Marta Minujín, and Clorindo Testa, among others.

Expectations for the Artist
Participating artists are expected to view this residency as a period of research, production, and immersion in the graphic arts within the context of a historic lithography studio. This involves not only access to specialized technical knowledge but also the opportunity to engage with an artistic tradition deeply rooted in the neighborhood’s cultural identity. The residency proposes a workspace where artistic practice intersects with traditional craftsmanship, the exchange of knowledge, and the contemporary exploration of graphic language. Artists are encouraged to develop and refine their techniques through traditional and experimental processes, making full use of the material resources, infrastructure, and expertise offered by a studio of historical and heritage value. The artist is expected to establish an active bond with the workspace, recognizing its historical dimension as a fundamental part of the creative process.
